Book Review: Geek Mafia

Hey, everyone. I read a different kind of book the other day. The title is Geek Mafia, by Rick Dakan. I downloaded it as an ebook via Stanza, which is an excellent source of free ebooks. The actual ebook came from Feedbooks, through the Stanza app. Rick's books are for sale on Amazon, also. Now that all that is out of the way, I'll give you the recipe for this novel.
Paul Reynolds is a comic book illustrator and creator. He is on the outs with some 'friends' whom he had joined in a business venture, striving to create a video game from Paul's successful independent comic called Metropolis 2.0. Unfortunately, Paul's bosom buddies have decided to fire him from the loose corporation which he had founded. Worse still, he is to be cut loose without a dime of compensation. A side note here. The writer has a background in the comics industry, I believe. I wonder if he has had an unpleasant experience? Stupid for me to think this because I write about a lot of things that, thank God, has not happened to me. Anyway, Paul is getting blasted in a bar in preparation for his dismissal interview when a lady with pink hair walks in. She is quite attractive and to Paul's surprise, the two have drinks and small-talk. The lady, Chloe, feels that she can help Paul get some settlement money out of his partners. When she masterfully manipulates the men who are about to fire Paul, Chloe and Paul become more than friendly.
Chloe is the leader of an odd group of folks who have varied skills with the predominate one being the ability to run a good con. Paul is fascinated with the girl, the group and their lifestyle. They pride themselves as being untrackable, having taken great pains to erase their true identities from the 'system'. One thing is for sure, Paul's life is changed forever.
I won't tell you any more, lest I ruin it for you. I found it different from the normal books I read. I love that the setting of the book is in California, which is one of my favorite areas. I love Chloe, because she is the type of femme fatale which I enjoy in my own novels, particularly Karina in KGB Retirement Program. I rate this novel as 4 stars out of 5.
Geek Mafia is the first novel in a trilogy about the same characters, as I understand. Moments ago I downloaded the second in the series from Feedbooks. You may be interested to know that the author has his own blog, which I found to be interesting and informative. It is at Rick Dakan.com
From the author's green retreat, I'm CE Wills.

The White Chicken Mystery

The other night I happened to come home very late. It was the middle of the night and I was driving up a steep mountain road. Near the top I saw something white in my headlights. It was standing in the other lane, standing very still. It was a large white chicken. It was probably a rooster because I thought I could see his comb as I whizzed by at my customary pace. He never moved a muscle. This is weird, don't you think?      After a couple of days to consider this phenomenon, I have come up with some plausible answers for his bizarre behavior. 1. He was conflicted whether or not he should cross the road. 2. He was feeling cocky and decided to play chicken with the traffic. 3.He was being hen-pecked at home and had decided to end it all. 4. Someone had egged him on to do it. 5. He had just watched the movie Fantastic Four and decided to try to stop a truck the way that Ben Grimm did on the bridge. 6. He had driven himself crazy wondering if ...

Batman Lives In Washington, DC

Hey, everyone. I just read an interesting article on Washington Post.Com by Mike Rosenwald. It was titled Who Is the Route 29 Batman? This is a true story about a guy that the cops pulled over. The guy was driving a black Lamborghini with Batman plates. There were yellow Batman symbols on the doors. They had a video from the police car that showed him being pulled over. He was wearing a Bat-suit which he said cost him $5000. His gig is that he visits sick children in area hospitals and hands out Bat-Toys and Bat-books to cheer the kids up.     His name is Lenny B. Robinson and he says that the 'B' stands for Batman. He is perfectly sane and is just a good dude trying to make a difference. He is a self-made millionaire and is currently having a duplicate of the Batmobile custom-made at a cost of $250,000.    It was a hoot, watching the cops having their pictures made with the Bat Guy. Someone asked him where Robin was and he said that the boy won...

Egg Art

Hey, everyone. One of the odd customs in America is the Easter Egg Hunt. Here at the Green Retreat, we do a hunt every Spring. I just ran across some of the pictures from this years hunt and it is obvious that an artist had sneaked into our midst. The orange egg is a rendering of one of the Angry Birds of gaming lore. If I were a bird and had to pass an egg that size, I would be angry too. Ha, ha.      We typically will dye about 10 dozen eggs and people get quite creative with their quotes and colors, as you can see. Many of the eggs are a bit risque for these pages. After having a few laughs, we hide the eggs. All of them are never found, which is cool. It is amusing to see old men (me) and all ages of folks, walking around with a basket on their arm. Some of the hiding spots are dastardly. Like eggs hidden in the guttering downspouts and ten foot up a tree. The kids are perhaps the most devious at hiding the colorful orbs, goi...
